The dark ruby-colored 1999 Chateauneuf du Pape reveals a Provencal nose of roasted herbs, ground pepper, plums, and cherries. Medium-bodied and soft, it is best consumed over the next 6-7 years.
With more stuffing and concentration (from lower yields and/or a stricter selection in the cellar), this wine could easily merit an outstanding rating as this estate owns fine vineyards. Nevertheless, there is plenty to enjoy in this straightforward, open-knit, user-friendly Chateauneuf du Pape. It is an unfortunate truth that wines that are too friendly and ready to drink, with limited aging potential, are probably not given enough value in scoring to those that have the greatest potential for longevity, and are more concentrated. I realize many readers just want a good wine for immediate drinking, and Les Clefs d'Or certainly fills that need.
